What is Stress?

It appears to us that when people say they are ’stressed out’ they are describing how they feel after they have begun to feel the stress response. When a therapist thinks of stress, they like to identify ’stressors’. The stressor is the mental or physical trigger of the stress response and it is usually important to figure out what the stressor is whenever we experience a stress response. Once the stressor is identified, steps can be taken to avoid or change the stressor in the future and thus reduce the perceived stress response.
