Stress, Mental and Physical

Stress often arises from our mental dialog. This mental dialog, often described as ‘the mind’ in the spiritual disciplines or as ’self-talk’ in psychology is an evaluative stream of mental dialog that creates anxiety through anticipation of negative consequences based upon speculation about the future. When we allow ourselves to react as if this negative speculation is valid we find ourselves in a position of weakness and powerlessness that creates anxiety and stress. Our reactions often involve the physical symptoms of stress which further reinforces how helpless we feel.

Being able to stand back from the mental dialog and determine speculation from fact is a powerful tool in managing stress.
