One important aspect of stress management is learning how to relax. Relaxing works as a stress management tool because relaxation directly counteracts the effects of tension. Relaxation also returns the body to it’s resting state after it has become hyperactive due to the effects of stress. When the body relaxes, it literally let’s go of it’s tension and a myriad of changes take place which are beneficial to the body.
It is probably true that many people find relaxation to be boring and uninteresting, particularly in the beginning. Wouldn’t it be interesting to find a way to make relaxation and relaxation training more interesting? Well, there is a new development called the biofeedback game which makes relaxation training very interesting.
Biofeedback games are computer games that use the same electronics as traditional biofeedback to monitor the body’s physiology but the biofeedback game incorporates this physiological data into the game instead of violence, sports or other physical activities. With physiological data used to build a gaming experience the user has the opportunity to influence events within the game by changing their physiology from tense to relaxed at different points within the game. The game player learns relaxation skills while in the midst of playing. So, the game provides an interesting pathway to learn relaxation skills within an entertainment context.
