This article talks about a study done on pregnant mothers who have endured stress in the early part of their pregnancy. As a result of the stress, they are more likely to give birth to a child who may develop schizophrenia. The stresses could include a natural disaster, a death in the family, or a terrorist attack. The study showed females to be the most affected. The placenta is very sensitive to the hormones of the mother and when stressed, hormones are amplified. Researchers believe this concept supports the idea that the greatest vulnerability is in the second month of pregnancy. Women that have anxiety or extreme stress should get help before becoming pregnant.
