The holidays are quickly approaching. We all go through bouts of stress during this time, dealing with family, time, and money. How can we stay sane and not stress out during this holiday season? Start first with your health, eat as well as you can and make sure you’re exercising at least three times a week. Exercise is a great way to reduce stress. When you’re feeling overwhelmed by it all take a few moments to regroup and relax. Request some time to yourself from the family so that you have some "me time". Get a good nights sleep every day so that you’re not running on empty. Really the majority of reducing stress is to just take care of yourself.

I hurt my knee running a few months ago and had the opportunity to try The Rhythm Touch product. I’m not big on taking pain medication so I thought I’d give it a try. After using the the product daily for about 30 minutes, I began to feel some relief. It uses low frequency impulses to contract the muscles slightly and block pain which can increase comfort and promote healing. The Rhythm Touch low frequency muscle massager can be used without a prescription and is portable making it very easy to use. This device is also valuable for help with long term stress management from a slow healing injury.

There was a study done in Australia that showed that chewing gum before stressful events actually reduced stress and anxiety and boosted alertness. Those who needed to perform under pressure felt that chewing gum was helpful during bouts of mild and moderate stress than compared to those who chewed no gum at all. We also know that most dentists recommend chewing sugarless gum after meals if you can’t brush to keep a healthy mouth. It was also found that chewing gum reduced the amount of cortisol (a stress hormone) in the saliva. Chewing gum cold be better for us than we thought.

Do you find that you reach for a not-so-good-for-you snack or meal when you’re stressed?Karen Lukin spokeswoman for Whole Foods Market has other suggestions. She recommends five foods that can serve you better when you’re stressed. Yogurt has probiotics that aid in digestion. Green leafy vegetables like broccoli and kale help boost the immune system. Salmon has omega-3 fatty acids and magnesium which inhibit the release of cortisol a stress hormone. Whole-grain carbs help with the production of serotonin that is a natural soother. And blueberries, they contain antioxidants and fiber which regulates your blood sugar. These are bound to make you feel much better in times of stress.

Research has shown that listening to music while pregnant reduces stress. The study included music set to the beat of the heart which reduced anxiety and depression. The music that was listened to included, lullabies, classical music and nature sounds. Listening to music seems to add to giving yourself time to relax which in itself can reduce stress, because you are giving yourself down time. This is particularly important if you are pregnant.

When incidents like this happen people focus on their immediate needs and it’s not until much later that the stress catches up with them. Make sure you take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, eating well and exercising. Make use of support from friends and family, don’t isolate yourself. If your stress is really bad, you may need to seek crisis counseling.

There was a study done on a small group of people to measure the effects of stress while giving a speech or presentation. The group took notes for two weeks on their sexual activities and also had their blood pressure taken before and after giving their presentation. Those who had had sex beforehand were less stressed and anxious. Those who did not have sex, had the highest blood pressure response to the stress. The calming effect that occurs can last up to a week according to Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen.
