Scientists at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center say they have found a compound to treat and potentially prevent breast cancer. It’s a component of broccoli and broccoli sprouts. It targets cancer stem cells, these cells are specifically responsible for fueling the growth of breast cancer tumors. Researchers tested this component, sulforaphane in animal studies. Their findings showed that sulforaphane targeted and killed cancer stem cells and prevented any new malignant tumors from growing. What’s so extraordinary about this is that chemotherapy doesn’t so anything to stop the cancer cells and cancer can return. The results of the animal tests shoed a dramatic decrease in the number of cancer stem cells after treatment with sulforaphane and there was little effect on the normal non-cancerous cells. As of now the research team is looking into a way to extract and preserve sulforaphane.
